The NHS Confederation has written to the health secretary and the British Medical Association (BMA) - the main doctors' union - asking them to accept the Advisory, Conciliation, and Arbitration Service as an honest broker that could set up talks to end the row. It emerged yesterday that the BMA had already begun talking to Acas to explore the possibility of it ending its impasse with Barclay.
The confederation's initiative, and the union's agreement to Acas getting involved, has put pressure on Barclay to agree. However, last night it remained unclear if he will do so, with the Department of Health and Social Care not immediately replying to questions.
