A plymouth charity that usually helps children in Romania is to use £1,000 of its funds to support refugee families arriving there from Ukraine.
Charity secretary of The Rainbow Project Plymouth, Hazel McCartney, said: “The events of the last week in Ukraine, which borders Romania, have caused us to contemplate giving some direct aid to help the refugees who are crossing into Romania on a daily basis. This is within the aims of the charity as set out in our constitution.
“Our contact, in the north of Romania, tells us there are thousands of people, mainly women and children, at the border crossing, often walking in temperatures of minus 5C at night and not much warmer during the day. They leave behind houses and husbands and bring only what they can carry.
