Army Deployed In Assam, Tripura As Violence Spreads

The Army was deployed in Guwahati, Tinsukia and Dibrugarh in Assam and in Kanchanpur and Manu areas of Tripura on Wednesday as protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2019, continued for the second day.

Another column, requisitioned in western Assam’s Bongaigaon district, has been put on standby and the paramilitary Assam Rifles have been deployed in the Ananda Bazar area of Kanchanpur, where the situation remained tense following Tuesday’s protests.

Army PRO Lt. Col. P. Khongsai said two Army columns have been deployed in Guwahati city and are carrying out flag marches.

As the debate on the Bill commenced in the Rajya Sabha, a relatively quiet morning was shattered by violent clashes across Assam’s Brahmaputra Valley, including capital Guwahati.

Railway stations set afire

A railway station in Dibrugarh’s Chabua, the hometown of Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, was set on fire by protesters late at night. The Panitola railway station in Tinsukia district was also torched, a Northeast Frontier Railway spokesperson said. The house of Union Minister Rameswar Teli in Duliajan was attacked by protesters and properties damaged.
