In the early hours of the disaster on Monday afternoon, residents in Molang village ferried rescuers and equipment on their motorcycles through narrow mountain roads in quickly fading light.
Most of the people in the village are now involved in supporting the search and rescue efforts, doing what they can to help, including transporting more equipment and supplies on the back of their two-wheelers.
Others curiously watch as an army of over 1,000 investigators, rescuers and volunteers descend upon Molang's muddy mountainside.
A local primary school has been turned into a command centre, with people shouting instructions over one another. In a public carpark across the road, trucks with satellite equipment are packed side by side with jeeps and police vehicles.
The village committee office is now a makeshift clinic.
No foreign journalists had been allowed anywhere near the crash site before yesterday - they were turned back at police stops.
When The Straits Times went to Molang on a visit organised by the local authorities, chickens milled about as sports utility vehicles jostled for room with motorcycles on muddy - and at times steep - single-lane roads that wound through the mountainside.
