‘Do not give birth to me in a village Where dreams are forever shackled Where the hot beads of my brother’s sweat have no value…’
As Bant Singh’s powerful voice gives expression to Dalit revolutionary poet Sant Ram Udasi’s words, his ‘torso’ comes alive. The voice rises above his emaciated body with no arms and one lifeless leg to seize the listener and jolt him. For Singh, a Dalit singer and activist from Burj Jhabar village in Punjab’s Mansa district, his life’s struggle is his message.
The song could have been sung for the 19-year-old Dalit girl who was allegedly gang-raped in UP’s Hathras district and then brutally beaten. Who would understand her pain better than Singh, whose own 16-year-old daughter was gang-raped by four upper-caste men in his village in 2002? The 56-year-old sings this song, a favourite of his daughter Baljit, as much for her, as for every girl who must fight for justice.
