From Hosp, She Helped Dharavi Celebrate Eid

Mumbai: A few days before Eid, Shaheen Jamadar’s phone began buzzing non-stop. A bunch of people from Dharavi was desperate to know where she was. It was festival time and they needed ration and clothes that she had been organising through an NGO ever since the lockdown began, reports Nitasha Natu.

Jamadar, 38, had been hospitalised with Covid 12 days ago. But the fact that people may not be able to celebrate Eid kept gnawing at her and she got down to work from her hospital bed. When the moon was sighted on Thursday night, ration kits had already reached the 170 families that had approached Jamadar for help.

“I am surviving. But these people have no food or water and will starve to death,” Jamadar explained over the phone.

She inspired Dharavi to join hands for the needy

So inspired were otherDharavi residents by Ja-madar’s efforts that they decided to pool in whatever little sums of money they could and donated it to the NGO instead of making an annual contribution to the local mosque for Eid.
