What To Expect When It Comes To C-Sections
Parents World|Issue 73

Giving birth can be an intimidating prospect, especially when it comes in the form of a major surgery. We cut to the chase for what to expect when it comes to C-sections.

What To Expect When It Comes To C-Sections

Whether or not you’re planning to have a caesarean section, it’s important to be aware of what the process involves. Doctors estimate the caesarean delivery rate to make up about 30% of all deliveries, with an upward trend over the past five to 10 years, making the procedure increasingly common.

While it is a choice for some moms, others might have to go under the knife for medical reasons. Despite this, there still exists a stigma attached to C-sections that can leave you feeling like you didn’t make the cut. Knowing what you’re in for will help you to have a more positive birth experience, and make this hectic transition to a new chapter of life feel less overwhelming.

The Clear-Cut Facts

Your doctor might recommend a planned C-section instead of a vaginal delivery if you’ve had a previous surgery that increases the risk of your uterus rupturing during a vaginal delivery. Moms carrying more than one baby also face a higher likelihood that a C-section is recommended, depending on factors like the positions of your babies. Other health conditions in either mother or baby can also lead to doctors recommending a C-section for a less risky delivery.

Whether your C-section is planned by choice or for medical reasons, your doctor will schedule your surgery for no earlier than 39 weeks – unless there are added health reasons – in order to make sure that your baby has time to develop enough for a healthy birth.
