A master at shooting some of the funniest and most recognisable personalities in show business, portrait photographer Luke Fontana talks to Jordan Butters about making a career of shooting the stars.
FROM THE MOMENT Luke Fontana first picked up a camera he knew he wanted to photograph people. he readily admits that there was never any interest in anything else. now, at the age of just 26 years old, the new York and Los Angeles-based photographer is highly regarded in his field. Luke’s speciality is photographing comedians and actors, and his signature style of studio portraits and ability to work under pressure have won him a roster of impressive clients, with his images featured in the likes of VanityFair, TimeOut, Esquire,Playboy and many more.
So, where did it all begin? After gaining encouragement in high school for his mastery of Photoshop “around the MySpace era” as he puts it, Luke went halves with his dad on his first digital SLr and 50mm lens, and started taking it with him wherever he went. he instantly knew that he wanted a career in photography. “I wanted to learn more about lighting and portraits,” Luke reminisces. “We lived in northern Virginia, but all the photographers that I wanted to work for were in new York or Los Angeles. During college, I eventually found an internship around an hour away. Three days a week I would get up at six in the morning, drive an hour to the internship and work for free. I learned basics of lighting and the next year I bought the same light and softbox the photographer used – I was familiar with it and didn’t know what else to get.”
