I recently had the opportunity to build this large scale resin kit; the Smilodon measures approx. 12 inches long and the base with logo nameplate measures approx. 6 inches wide and over 14 inches long. A beautiful casting with excellent joint part fittings showcasing intricate detail. This article briefly discusses the basic steps I used to hand paint this beastie.
PREPAINTING: As with any model kit, it is vital that you clean all the parts with soap and warm water before assembly. You can use many types of primers including auto primers. I used a rust-oleum black spray primer for this model and I do so for most of my buildups. Black primer provides greater depth for the color application than do lighter primers. I spray the primer with thin overlaping layers until coverage is complete. It is best to allow the primer to cure overnite before continuing with the next step- color application.
