When a 30-year-old Roger De Vlaeminck sprinted past 20-year-old Giuseppe Saronni in the closing metres of the 1977 edition of the Giro del Piemonte, the Italian press billed his narrow win as atriumph of experience over strength. While Saronni was hailed as an Italian great in waiting, what was not then known was that De Vlaeminck’s win would enter the books as the final road victory to be recorded by his famous Brooklyn team.
