Dygert Blasts Her Way Into The Record Books

American wins women’s time trial by historic margin

There was a period on Saturday afternoon when it looked as if Chloé Dygert (USA) was going to pull off a very unexpected time trial and road race double in Harrogate. It only lasted for 20 minutes or so, but when she roared off after Dutchwoman Annemiek van Vleuten, the one thing we knew from the TT a few days earlier was that Dygert should have the speed to catch her.

She didn’t, though, appearing to run out of energy with about 16km left. She came in fourth. And so she ended up in the odd situation of having won the world time trial title by the biggest margin, male or female, in the history of the event, yet that being only the week’s second most memorable bit of time trialing after van Vleuten’s lone 105km.
