Cycle racing went through a seismic change in 1952 as the National Cyclists’ Union (NCU) had finally decided to take massed-start racing on the roads under its jurisdiction. The body had opposed massed-start racing for years – as had this magazine and many of its readers – but after a decade of mounting pressure applied by the British League of Racing Cyclists and its de facto leader Percy Stallard, the NCU finally changed their position.
