Richard Carapaz (Ineos Grenadiers) ended a dramatic opening week of the Vuelta with the leader’s red jersey after a battle for the general classification that started on day one.
The truncated 18-stage race that takes place almost exclusively in the north of the country, began with a summit finish which put an early end to Chris Froome’s GC hopes. The seven-time Grand Tour winner, riding his last race for the British team, was dropped on the penultimate 2.9-kilometre climb of Alto de Elgeta and lost over 11 minutes by the time he crossed the line.
