Sarah Ewens on the Celtic Women’s team going pro, and setting the bar higher again in the season ahead
JOE DONNELLY
THE PROFESSIONALS

SARAH Ewens bagged 22 goals last season in what must be considered Celtic’s best season in women’s football.

Now, with many in the team going professional, the 28-year-old attacker looks forward to building on that momentum, and pushing for silverware in the campaign ahead.

Ahead of the new campaign, and a pre-season tournament on the continent this weekend, the Celtic View caught up with Ewens.

THE CELTIC WOMEN’S TEAM HAVE TURNED PROFESSIONAL, CONGRATULATIONS!

Thanks, it’s so exciting. It’s huge. It’s a dream come true, and that’s what you always want to do as a kid, you want to grow up and become a professional footballer. It’s a massive opportunity to do that here at Celtic and one that I’ll never ever take for granted. The hard work starts now, but I’m absolutely delighted. My family are the same, and I don’t know who my Mum’s not told at this point!

FROM A PERSONAL PERSPECTIVE, HOW EXCITING IS BEING PART OF THE PRO MOVE?

It’s incredible. When I was younger and first coming into the women’s game, I couldn’t have imagined the profile that it has now. That was unheard of back then, no one spoke about it. For any of the youngsters that are coming through now, it’s a fantastic opportunity for them – I kind of wish I was in their shoes sometimes! But, no, it’s great for these guys, who have the opportunity to go on in years to come and prove themselves at professional level. It’s great to see how much clubs like Celtic are investing in women’s football.

YOU MUST BE DETERMINED TO BUILD ON LAST YEAR’S SUCCESS?
