Mahendra Singh Dhoni would undoubtedly be experiencing something akin to life coming full circle with the impending ICC World Twenty20. Although he would not openly acknowledge the emotions, the ICC World Twenty20 was, after all, the stage where he laid the foundation stone for his well deserved epithet today as India’s most successful captain. Ironically the ICC World Twenty20 could, also, mark the summit of his journey.

Although Mahendra Singh Dhoni has refused to be drawn into speculation about the possibility of his retirement from international cricket altogether at the end of the ICC World Twenty20 2016, the argument could be made that barring a miracle, the ICC World Twenty 2016 could plausibly end up being the final major ICC multi-team tournament that the thirty-four year old will don the gloves and pad up as India’s cricket team captain.
Although widely speculated, one would not go so far as to suggest that the ICC World Twenty20 could be Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s international swansong. The tournament could, however, point in the direction that unless India pull off the unthinkable and win the home edition – their first ICC World Twenty20 success since Dhoni’s men lifted the trophy in the inaugural edition nine years ago, the skipper’s time on the captaincy may well be on its last legs.
