Over the years of all the international junior surf comps held in NZ, these competitions have given our own junior surfers a chance to mix it with the best talents in the world, given a taste of what is needed to make it on the global stage and given our surf populations in attendance a glimpse into the future of world surfing.
It wasn’t that long ago that we got to witness a fresh-faced grom named Julian Wilson destroy the waves at Ruapuke during a Pro-Junior, then in 2009 during the ISA World Junior Champs the cast was intense, with names such as Tyler Wright, Kolohe Andino, Keanu Asing, Lakey Peterson, Courtney Conologue, Ezekiel Lau and many more with the wonder kid from Brazil named Gabriel Medina totally blowing minds. From that contest alone of those names, there are at least 10 surfers that went on to compete on the World Tour and four World Titles between them.
Raglan has always captured the attention of the worlds surfers, and every event held over the last 30 plus years has always seen some of the big names of world surfing show up with a couple of promising groms in tow.
