Riding high on expectations, Gaurav Gill is ready for WRC 2
DREAMS HAVE A strange way of coming around, even if you are a veteran racer. For Gaurav Gill, 2018 will mean the realisation of a long-cherished childhood venture that he embarks on with Team MRF this year.
“We will be competing in the WRC2, which means that you are participating at the world level. It is like the Olympics of rallying. I had this dream from childhood when I used to watch rallying videos, that one day I would go and compete there. So I am thankful to my team and sponsors for giving me this opportunity,” said Gill in an exclusive conversation with SPORTS ILLUSTRATED.
MRF Racing has been a long-standing partner of Gill’s and together they have conquered the summit in the Asia-Pacific Rally Championship (APRC). Gill finished as champion in 2013, whilst also finishing on the podium for another two seasons—third in 2014 and second in 2015.
Gill, who has been at the summit of India’s rallying scene since the turn of this millennium, is unable to hold his excitement when talking about the future prospects.
“It couldn’t have come at a better time. An Indian team and manufacturer will help me take this step up to WRC2. I am totally committed and passionate about my sport, and I will make the most of this opportunity, ensuring that we come up with good results,” he said.
