Lionel Messi scored his 500th goal for Barcelona in the last minute of the El Clasico to help the Catalan giant to a fighting 3-2 victory over arch rival Real Madrid.

The win reignited that La Liga title race, with Barca moving to the top of the charts on better goal difference. Real, however, has a game in hand.

James Rodriguez appeared to have rescued a point for the host with an 86th-minute strike to make it 2-2 after goals from Messi and Ivan Rakitic had overturned Casemiro’s opener. But Barcelona, enjoying the extra man advantage after Sergio Ramos was sent off for a horror tackle on the Argentine No. 10, snatched all three points in the final minute after Messi slotted past goalkeeper Keylor Navas.

Third-placed Atletico Madrid’s good run continued as it eked out a 1-0 win at Espanyol, with the result keeping it three points ahead of Sevilla, which beat lowly Granada 2-0 at home.
