Understanding Detoxification and Toxins

Detox or cleansing simply means removing toxins from the body. Detoxification is an essential practice for optimal health. Toxins are present everywhere in our ecosystem - the water we drink, the food we eat, the air we breathe etc. Mental stress also adds up to toxin levels in the body. Toxins are also produced as by-products of digestion and the countless chemical processes that take place inside our body. Now the concerns could be - how do these toxins affect health and how does the body handle them? How can we remove toxins from the body? Also, how can we remove toxins from our environment?

Firstly let's talk about why we require detoxification.

Why should we detox?

Directly or indirectly, we expose our body to unwanted or unhealthy food, excess of substances like caffeine, unhealthy habits such as smoking and alcohol, stress, or the environmental factors. No matter how healthy our diet or lifestyle is, environmental toxins or those produced inside our system can slow down or hinder efficient functioning of our body.

Our body constantly eliminates waste from time to time with the help of organs such as liver, lungs, kidneys, skin etc. The most important organ of all which helps in cleansing toxins is our liver. Liver plays a vital role to cleanse our body. It is a multitasking organ - from cleaning the body to metabolic functioning, filtering nutrients and eliminating waste from the body. When the liver handles too much, it makes the body to exhibit symptoms. It’s therefore important to understanding these symptoms and start with a corrective health approach.
