Paul Edwards says Glenn Maxwell’s role as Lancashire talisman can help Australia’s bid in this summer’s World Cup
GlennMaxwell is being interviewed on the Lord’s balcony. It is Sunday evening and he has just taken a career-best 5-40 to steer Lancashire to an impressive seven-wicket victory over Middlesex. A few feet away, on the away dressing-room balcony, a couple of his team-mates have celebratory beers in their hands and they disrupt the interview with mild mockery. It is, as most journalists know, what young cricketers are wont to do in the aftermath of triumph. Maxwell turns to them and tells them to ‘behave’. Then he smiles. He is settling in just fine at Lancashire.
This is excellent news for supporters at Emirates Old Trafford. Maxwell may be a trifle unconventional but he is a thinking cricketer and while the main item on his summer agenda is the World Cup – he was named in Australia’s 15-man squad on Monday – he aims to spend as much time as possible either side of that showpiece playing white, and redball, cricket for Lancashire.
“On top of the 50-over games, I’ll be here for most of the Blast as well as a few four-day matches at the end of the season,” he said. “The big thing for me is using my experience to help the guys.
