BROTHERS IN ARMS? DON'T YOU BET ON IT!

From Cane and Abel to the Chuckles, the Kennedys and Marxs right through to the Gallaghers and erm…Jedward, sibling relationships don’t always run smooth.

After the second ODI against Australia in which the Curran brothers both impressed, captain Eoin Morgan hailed their performance: “Every time they come in, there is a level of competitiveness more visual than any other player.”

Perhaps Tom and Sam’s sibling rivalry brings out the best in each other? Spurring one-another on to bowl faster or hit it further. Is this always the case? Here are some more notable cricketing brothers from over the years.

The Graces

Before the Gilligans, Greigs, Hearnes and Hollioakes came the Graces. There’s WG of course, also known as ‘The Big’un’ or ‘The Doctor’, his legacy and impact on the game as impressive as his mighty beard, hailing from a family of nine children, including some less famous cricketing brothers.

The lesser known but still fantastically facial-haired Edward Mills Grace and younger sibling Fred turned out with William Gilbert in the first Test match on English soil at the Oval in 1880, all making their Test debut. It was the first time three brothers had played for the same Test side, a feat matched nearly 90 years later when Hanif, Sadiq and Mushtaq Mohammad played for Pakistan against New Zealand at Karachi in 1969.

WG notched up a ton on Test debut, of course he did, but tragically youngest brother Fred fell ill during the game with flu-like symptoms which escalated into a severe case of pneumonia. He died just two weeks later aged only 29.
