AUSTRALIA’S fortunes may have risen and fallen since 1877 but one thing has remained constant – the fact that the Melbourne Cricket Ground, the iconic MCG, or simply the ‘G’, has been world cricket’s largest venue.
That, though, is about to change. In Gujarat, construction is well underway to create a stadium that will eclipse the 100,000 capacity of the jewel in Australian cricket’s crown, with the new Ahmedabad ground expected to hold in excess of 110,000 spectators once it’s completed.
Spread over 63 acres, the redeveloped Sardar Patel Gujarat Stadium – which was first built in 1983 – has already carved its name into Indian cricket folklore. Not only did Sunil Gavaskar score his 10,000th Test run there, it was also a venue that witnessed Kapil Dev beating Richard Hadlee’s then world record tally of 431 Test wickets.
