JON LEWIS is backing his England U19 side to put a smile back on faces after an otherwise forgettable winter for English cricket.
The Sussex bowling coach was parachuted in as U19s head coach after Worcestershire’s Steve Rhodes stood down.
That has handed Lewis, who won an England Test cap against Sri Lanka in 2006, the opportunity to boost his credentials as a head coach in waiting – and it’s one that he’s determined to seize with both hands.
Speaking to The Cricket Paper after the tournament’s opening ceremony, Lewis said that the talent available to England will make them competitive in a competition they have not won since 1998.
“I’m very much looking forward to it,” he said. “The opening ceremony really brought it home how much of a big event this is for the lads – this is a once in a lifetime opportunity for them.
“It’s a great opportunity for them to showcase their skills on an international stage and the fact is that they only get one chance to do it.
“It’s a great opportunity for us as coaches, too, to show what we can do too. I’d think that India are favourites but in a competition like this anything can happen and in a one-off game this team have showed they’re capable of beating anyone.”
