THE Pakistan-Afghanistan game during the World Cup was on a knife-edge. In a must-win game for a possible place in the semi-final, Pakistan were struggling to reach a modest target of 228 when Imad Wasim stepped up to the task and soaked up the pressure of the chase to take Pakistan to a tense win.
In a well-controlled innings of 49 not out, the Pakistan allrounder took his team to a three-wicket victory against a spirited Afghan side when it looked as if the 1992 World Champions would end up with an embarrassing defeat, handing Afghanistan their only victory of the competition in the process.
With just five ODI fifties to his name before this careerdefining knock, Imad Wasim’s 54-ball innings finally brought worldwide attention to a somewhat undervalued player who had hitherto been primarily considered as a Twenty20 specialist.
Thus, Nottinghamshire’s decision to sign him for their T20 Blast campaign is simply a recognition of his newfound status and, as he remarked, is an experience he is enjoying immensely.
