Woakes vows to make up for absent Anderson in Ashes
CHRIS Woakes has admitted he has no idea if James Anderson will play again in this summer’s Ashes series – but is still positive England can land the first blow and win an evenly-poised opening Test against Australia.
Anderson was again missing from England’s attack as they reduced the tourists to 124-3 – a slender lead of 34 – by the end of day three in Birmingham.
Woakes had earlier scored an unbeaten 37 during a 65-run stand with Stuart Broad that had handed Joe Root’s men a 90-run advantage on first innings.
But Anderson, who came out to bat briefly after testing his injured calf in the nets at lunch, was again absent from the attack when Australia started their second innings.
