After a season of starting four quarterbacks, the Washington Football Team still doesn’t know how 2021 will fare.
Dwayne Haskins was released in the season’s final week, an open snub to its 2019 first-rounder who disappointed on and off the field. Alex Smith is taking a few weeks to ponder retirement. Kyle Allen needs to heal from a broken leg and Taylor Heinicke must be resigned.
Yet, Heinicke’s play in the Tampa Bay playoff loss sparked immense optimism over finding a playmaker. Enough that maybe it’s time to move on from Smith and draft the long-term solution if Heinicke and Allen aren’t it.
Heinicke is clearly the fan favorite, but coach Ron Rivera said he made a mistake not having an open competition last summer when anointing Haskins the starter. So, someone will have to earn it in August.
But, Rivera learned plenty of the offense’s potential by playing four passers this season.
