This ultra-thin convertible has an imperfect screen but brilliant design, performance and battery life
CONVERTIBLE LAPTOPS AREN’T as popular as the more common 2-in-1 form factor as used by devices such as the Microsoft Surface Pro. It’s a bit of a shame, as convertibles typically have better keyboards than their 2-in-1 counterparts, making them better laptops; and for those times you want a tablet, you can just slip the keyboard around the back of the screen.
Lenovo certainly sees the benefit of convertibles, updating its Yoga line with genuinely great products, such as the Yoga Book (Shopper 348). It’s now launched the 13.9in Yoga 920, a replacement for the Yoga 900. It’s a bit more expensive than that £999 laptop: the Yoga 920 starts at £1,199 for the entry-level model, which includes an 8th-gen Intel Core i5-8250U processor, 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. Upgrade to a Core i7-8550U CPU with 512GB of storage, like the one we tested, and you’re looking at £1,349.
HEAD TURNER
Pick up the Yoga 920, and it certainly feels like a four-figured-sum of a laptop. Despite shaving 1mm from its design, the all-aluminium unibody chassis feels rock solid. Tastefully slim, the Yoga 920 measures just 14mm thin, and weighs a spine-friendly 1.37kg.
The 360° watchband hinge – a staple of Lenovo’s convertibles – makes another appearance with the Yoga 920. This holds the screen securely in place, no matter the angle.
