Reader Ruan Strydom shows that if you have the skills, you can do many overlanding modifications in your own workshop.
Since I was a small boy, I have dreamed about having a bakkie with a rooftop tent and all the other 4x4 accessories. In 2013, I had the opportunity of buying a 2003 Isuzu KB300 4x4 LX from my dad, who was the second owner of the bakkie. He’d had the bakkie for about nine years.
It was in rough shape, as it was my dad’s daily driver to work at Transnet port operations, and was full of iron-ore dust and red stains. My dad and I started to disassemble the bakkie and clean and prep everything for a respray. We took off the front steel bumper and all its mountings, as well as the rear tow bar and the load bin. We cleaned the whole chassis and underside of the body and gave it a nice new coat of Chassis Black.
