It takes a lot to decide your wedding day look. Undoubtedly, make-up is a key aspect of the look. And choosing the right make-up artist who knows his craft well is always a huge dilemma and therefore, we bring to you expert advice on what discussions you should have with your make-up artist based on which you decide who’s the best one for you.
Arzoo Shah, Mumbai-based bridal make-up artist
Initial Discussion...
Always inquire about:
Check for booking details and charges of the artist, including stay, travel, etc.
Whether the same artist will be present on the wedding day. Also ask for a backup plan in case the MUA can’t make it on the day of the event.
Check the artist’s portfolio and ask about their work experience.
Ensure they use good quality make-up products and always ask about how the make-up will photograph.
Discuss your skin concerns, if you have any, right at the start.
Ask if they offer trial session before the wedding.
Check if the artist will come to the wedding venue of if you need to go to the salon—choose the most convenient option!
On Trial Sessions...
Just like you would never buy a fancy car without taking it for a test drive first, don’t even think about booking a wedding make-up artist without seeing his or her talent displayed on your face. Don’t hire an artist whose work you haven’t seen. A make-up artist should have a portfolio (either a physical one or digital) or a website. You must see an artist’s work before you even make an appointment for a trial.
Skin Prep Time...
Six months. You must start early before you walk down the aisle.
Deciding the D-day Look...
I ask client a series of preliminary questions to find out about the event, her outfit, daily make-up routine and skin type, the date of the event, and her expectations. Encourage her to bring inspiration photos from magazines on the day of the consultation.
Look Preference...
Classic: For the marriage function and sangeet or mehendi events.
