And when her piece was published in the New York Times, disclosing that she had lost her unborn child in July, there was indeed something of a frenzy over her revelation.
Most of the response was extremely positive, with members of the public, women’s health experts and high-profile personalities sympathising with Meghan and her husband Prince Harry for their sad loss, as well as praising the duchess for speaking out on a subject that is often taboo.
Meghan says she first noticed a problem when she experienced a sharp pain while changing son Archie’s nappy.
“I knew as I clutched my firstborn child that I was losing my second,” Meghan wrote. “I dropped to the floor with him in my arms, humming a lullaby to keep us both calm, the cheerful tune a stark contrast to my sense that something was not right. Hours later, I lay in a hospital bed, holding my husband’s hand. I felt the clamminess of his palm and kissed his knuckles, wet from both our tears.”
A source close to Meghan says she wanted to write about their “almost unbearable grief” because it was important to talk about a subject that is often kept quiet, despite the fact that miscarriages are common. (In New Zealand, miscarriage affects one in every four women.)
