The hot season is fast approaching and we all want to shed that winter bulge to get our bodies ready for summer. Inspired by colleague Nonhlakanipho, four of us at True Love decided to embark on a 10-day diet challenge. Our colleague is disciplined when it comes to a healthy lifestyle. She watches what she eats and exercises every day to keep her body looking good.
Before starting our challenge, we consulted Joburg-based dietitian Ashleigh Caradas, for tips on how to diet safely and maintain our respective diets.
VEGAN DIET

“This diet was hard; I couldn’t imagine a meal without meat. Normally I eat meat almost every day and I craved it.”
Breakfasts: I’d blend a green smoothie and snack on strawberries. Usually I’d eat a bacon and egg sandwich, but this time I tried having it with lettuce, tomato and avocado.
Lunches: I’d have brown rice with cabbage for lunch or eat a vegetable pizza. I’d also snack on nuts. I found smoothies to be an easy way to incorporate greens into my diet as raw food can be boring. Suppers: Spinach curry with brown rice was my favourite meal. I also enjoyed roasted tomatoes with pasta.
“My metabolism started to function better. I got my groove back, but had meat cravings all week and finally succumbed to them. I was emotional – maybe from cutting out food that I was eating daily. It made me realise how much I depended on that food. I had a glass of wine to try to fix my mood, but waking up with a hangover stopped that. I drank lots of water throughout the day and had only fruit.”
