1 Get moving
It may sound counterintuitive if you’re struggling to get about, but it is important to incorporate regular movement into your day. ‘A good balance of weekly cardiovascular and strengthening exercises will help to keep your muscles and joints working as they should, which will relieve discomfort,’ says Catherine Quinn, president of the British Chiropractic Association (BCA). ‘One of my favourite at-home stretches is using a rolled-up towel and lying down with it running centrally down the spine – this will help to open up your chest and the joints in your back.’
2 Use heat and ice
Not sure which? ‘For some, the relaxing impact of heat can reduce tension in muscles and joints, but for others – when perhaps the pain is more acute – ice will be more beneficial,’ says Catherine. The best part about this remedy is you can use everyday items, such as a wheat bag in the microwave, a hot-water bottle, a bag of frozen peas or an ice pack wrapped in a towel. Remember to apply for 15-20 minutes at a time to avoid damaging your skin.
