Great news! Scientists reveal why our favourite festive snack could actually be good for your heart
Crumbly Cheddar, oozing Brie and melt-in-your-mouth Stilton – the cheeseboard is often a Christmas highlight. But perhaps not the healthiest? Previously just looking at a slice of blue was thought enough to clog up our arteries and bring on a coronary. But new research may provide good news for all you cheese lovers. According to reports, eating Cheddar, Stilton and Brie could reduce our risk of heart disease (yes, really!). Crackers and grapes at the ready…
Sorting the fat from the fiction
The fact that cheese could be a healthy option may come as a surprise to many. Previously, it’s had a bit of a reputation as a fatty, salt-filled, calorie-crammed indulgence – and just one more thing to feel guilty about at Christmas. And while there’s no denying that cheese is rich in all three – just a small wedge of Cheddar (around 50g) contains 205 cals, 17g of fat and almost 1g of salt – recent research has found that it contains several health benefits too, such as boosting heart health. Who knew?!
