Winsome Wilson

It was love at first sight when Wilson the miniature Shetland pony trotted into a rehabilitation care home in Scotland. The tiny horse with a golden mane bonded instantly with residents, nuzzling up to comfort them and even trotting with them down the halls.

Wilson’s sweet and gentle nature inspired his owners, Elaine and John Sangster, to expand the initiative to care homes across Scotland, and he is now one of 15 therapy ponies who regularly bring cheer and companionship to elderly and disabled residents.

In 2021, Wilson stole the show at the People’s Pet Awards, scooping the Caring Animal prize for his work.

Missy, the feline cancer scanner

Newcastle-based tabby cat Missy displayed a remarkable sixth sense when she alerted her owner, Angela, to the early signs of cancer.

When Missy began persistently pawing at her chest, the unusual behaviour prompted Angela to visit her GP to check it out. Precancerous cells were found in her breast and removed. When Missy’s mysterious pawing happened again three years later, Angela knew exactly what to do. She headed straight to the doctor for life-saving treatment – all thanks to her medico moggie’s impressive diagnosis.
