TREAT yourself

The Newt, Bruton, Somerset

Unique selling point Magnificent formal gardens.

The low-down Set among 800 acres of woodland and farmland, The Newt hotel, based in and around a 17th-century former country house, is best known for its beautiful gardens. They have been tended by various experts over the past couple of centuries, with their most recent incarnation overseen by renowned Italo-French architect Patrice Taravella, whose belief is that gardens should be both useful and alluring.

Herbs, flowers, fruit, vegetables and honey produced on site supply the restaurants within the hotel and wider estate, while you'll also find cottage gardens, a Victorian fragrance garden, and the Parabola walled garden containing a vast collection of apple trees arranged in a baroque-style maze. Greenhouses and fountains pepper the landscape, and The Story of Gardening is an immersive, interactive exhibition charting the history and evolution of these stunning outdoor spaces.

The in-house Thai restaurant, Nipa Thai, is as much a destination for locals as for guests.

A New Normal - The Princess of Wales is looking to the future, putting family first and ditching her to-do list

The Princess of Wales has always felt the pressure. Marrying into the most famous family in the world has been far from easy, but capable Catherine seemed to take it in her stride.Though the glamorous carapace, whether decked in Alexander McQueen or Zara, has hidden a more anxious young woman who didn't want to put a foot wrong. This past year has arguably been the toughest of Catherine's life - dealing with major abdominal surgery followed by a cancer diagnosis and treatment. But it has also given her the time to reprioritise and reassess what really matters.
