She once jokingly referred to the White House as “a really nice prison” and so it was that days after Michelle Obama handed over the mantle of First Lady to Melania Trump, she did something any newly released inmate would appreciate. She made herself cheese on toast!

Don’t get her wrong. The 54-year-old mother-of-two always understood just how important – and special – her role was as the United States’ first African-American First Lady. But living, and raising her daughters Malia and Sasha, at the epicentre of world power for eight years meant some home comforts were few and far between.

In January 2017, alone in the Washington DC house that she and husband Barack moved into upon relinquishing the presidency, Michelle suddenly realised it was the “first regular house with a door and a doorbell” that she’d had in almost a decade.

“I go downstairs and open the cabinet in my own kitchen, which you don’t do in the White House because there’s always somebody there going, ‘Let me get that. What do you want? What do you need?’ And I made myself toast. Cheese toast.”
