When Woman’s Day calls to congratulate Roger Farrelly on being named New Zealand’s Hottest Radio Hunk, The Rock’s shock jock is surprisingly subdued. “Is this a hoax?” the 44-year-old asks.

Only days earlier, Roger – who ran a tireless campaign, including taking part in a sexy beach photo shoot in a bid to secure votes – received an alarming call from the magazine informing him a technical glitch on our voting page meant his landslide lead in the competition was a lie.

“She had a very professional phone manner and said, ‘I feel terrible telling you this and my heart’s beating, but I have some really bad news,’” recalls the dad-of-two. “I remember it so vividly because I was lying in bed trying to calculate how on earth I was going to claw back all the votes.”

But his distress was all in vain, for it wasn’t Woman’s Day calling at all, rather some cheeky skulduggery on behalf of his competition, Gareth Pringle in Palmerston North.

“To take the win is a true honour. I’m over the moon,” says Roger. “It’s a win for the common man and it’s a win for The Rock – this victory will go down in history.”
