Stay calm, it will be over soon, Sandy Murphy told herself as she sat up in bed and grabbed her inhaler off the nightstand. Waking in the middle of the night with chest tightness, coughing, wheezing or shortness of breath had been part of the Chicago native's life for more than a decade due to asthma and chronic bronchitis.
Trouble sleeping meant Sandy would frequently spend her days fighting head bobs and yawns at work. Her symptoms also often prevented her from participating in physical activities, like walking or hiking, things she enjoyed for relaxation and fitness. Her symptoms ranged from mild to severe, depending on the day, and were exacerbated by fall allergies and exercise.
Sandy had tried several prescription medicines and inhalers, along with a nebulizer, but experienced only temporary relief.
