TAKING INSPIRATION from the 1961-80 International Scout, the Scout Terra and Traveler concepts preview the nascent automaker's upcoming electric pickup truck and SUV of the same names. Those two Scouts are still a couple-three years off, though, with the Volkswagen-backed brand planning to kick off production in early 2027 at its currently under-construction South Carolina plant. Scout says the designs of the rugged-looking concepts will carry over to the finished product 85 percent intact.
This includes the brand-specific full-length frame that underpins the battery-powered models. While the Terra is longer overall and has a stretched wheelbase, both all-wheel-drive Scouts incorporate an independent front suspension that complements a live rear axle, an uncommon setup in EVs and one with the potential to hinder ride quality and handling significantly. Then again, achieving high lateral loads on tarmac seems secondary to the models' offroad prowess. Thanks to the engineering of their body-on-frame platform, Scout claims they can ford nearly three feet of water and accommodate tires as tall as 35 inches. They also offer more than 12.0 inches of ground clearance.
