THE ULTIMATE Classic?

KAMM's 750kg Porsche 912 is back, having been recalibrated for road touring. Does it now offer the best of both performance and practicality? Total 911 takes a drive through the countryside to find out...

THE ULTIMATE Classic?

I knew that I’d like the KAMM 912c. What I didn’t expect is by just how much. Usually, when briefed here I’ll spend a few thousand words explaining the why, how and what before concluding, but today’s going to be a bit different. The KAMManufaktur 912c is absolutely brilliant. Indeed, I’d go as far as saying it’s one of the most absorbing, exciting and interesting cars I’ve ever driven for these pages.

There it is then, a rock-solid conclusion – but if you’re interested in how I got to that, do read on. Unusually, too, we’re revisiting the 912c because it’s featured previously in Total 911, but there have been several revisions to the car, with this development now better representing the vehicle that customers will eventually receive.

Hailing from Budapest, KAMManufaktur is the realisation of Miklós Kázmér’s desire to build his perfect car. In his youth Miklós worked in speedshops where, through necessity, the mechanics used ingenuity and invention to squeeze more performance from the rolling stock of communist vehicles. Miklós took up photography and became a successful filmmaker, but his love of cars never left him. While living and working in the US he indulged in his passion for automobiles and owned a number of early 911s as well as a 912, and was particularly fond of the short wheelbase cars. He had people enhance those, but he was never truly satisfied, and after being unable to find specialists willing or able to create his perfect 912, he set about building it himself.
