However, Neuschäfer was one of only three skippers to finish the second running of the ‘retro’ Golden Globe Race, the single-handed race around the world in traditional long-keeled yachts.
Sixteen skippers set off in September 2022, with just three going on to complete the course non-stop. At the time of going to press, two more looked set to finish a circumnavigation having made one stop, which automatically moved them to ‘Chichester’ class.
Neuschäfer may have returned to Les Sables d’Olonnes as victor (see 50 page for our profile on Neuschäfer and her remarkable race), but unusually, she wasn’t the first boat back to the start port, with British skipper Simon Curwen bringing his Biscay 36 Clara home earlier the same day.
