Rural Auto Market Surges to New Heights
BUSINESS ECONOMICS|August 1 - 31, 2023
India’s rural markets, which had remained stagnant for the previous three years due to the economic effects of the pandemic, are now gaining momentum and are expected to drive demand for automobiles, motorcycles, and tractors as the nation enters the holiday shopping season later this quarter. Surprisingly, the rural auto market has emerged as a success story, defying initial predictions of economic downturns in the aftermath of the global pandemic. While urban areas initially experienced a slump in automobile sales due to pandemic-related restrictions and remote work arrangements, rural communities have shown remarkable resilience, driving the demand for vehicles to unprecedented levels.

Rural Auto Market Surges to New Heights

Several senior industry executives attribute this rural market surge to factors such as reducing rural inflation, increasing non-agricultural income, and raising the minimum support price for all kharif crops. These measures put more money in the hands of consumers in rural markets, boosting demand and bridging the country’s divergent recovery since the easing of Covid restrictions. According to Maruti Suzuki, the largest automaker in India, sales of passenger cars rose by 14% in rural areas last quarter, outpacing the 11% increase in urban centers. RC Bhargava, Chairman of Maruti Suzuki India, stated, “The rural sentiment is definitely better, and rural sales have again picked up.” He attributes this improvement to good monsoon last year and the revival of the rural economy, which has positively impacted fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) sales as well.

Of Benchmarks & Benefits

Banks use various benchmark rates to determine loan pricing. Initially, they had complete discretion over interest rates, leading to the adoption of the Prime Lending Rate (PLR). This internally determined rate was applied to the bank’s most creditworthy customers, with additional risk premiums charged for borrowers deemed riskier. However, this system resulted in a wide disparity in interest rates among borrowers.
