For many of us, the new year is a chance to turn over a new leaf and kick-start our health and fitness regimes.

But while we may begin January with the best of intentions, many find it a struggle to stick to our resolutions.

Last year, 54% of us made new year’s resolutions, with a quarter of those focused on weight loss and better health. This week, millions of us will again be setting ourselves fresh goals, but typically only a quarter of those who make resolutions actually stick to them.

So how can we make sure we don’t fail before February? CrossFit coach Lucy Campbell, dubbed the UK’s fittest woman in 2022, says setting realistic goals is key.

“If you drastically decrease the amount of calories you’re consuming, or cut out certain food groups, you’ll likely feel lethargic and lack energy, which isn’t sustainable,” says Lucy. “It’s the same when you have a new gym routine. If you haven’t been consistently exercising and plan to work out six times per week, your body won’t be used to it.”

A slow and steady approach works best, she says. “I’d advise building up your training sessions over a few months so your body can adapt to the increased load,” says Lucy, adding that it’s crucial to pick an exercise you enjoy. “There’s no point torturing yourself going on a run if you really don’t like it. Try different things, whether that’s lifting weights, swimming, cycling, dancing or yoga – whatever makes you feel good.”
