The 81st Golden Globe Awards was an unforgettable night of glitz, glamour and, of course, highly anticipated trophies. Hollywood’s A-listers came together on 7 January to attend the Beverly Hills bash and celebrate the best of film and TV from 2023.
With the likes of Oppenheimer, Barbie and Succession scooping coveted gongs, the Golden Globes kick-starts awards season and is closely followed as the event serves as a predictor for winners of the upcoming Academy Awards in March.
Cillian Murphy and Oppenheimer led the big winners as the Irish star won Best Performance By A Male Actor In A Motion Picture – Drama, while Christopher Nolan was awarded Best Director for the 2023 thriller about the birth of the atomic bomb.
Lily Gladstone made history as the first Indigenous actor to receive the accolade for Best Performance By A Female Actor In A Motion Picture – Drama for her role in Killers Of The Flower Moon, while Barbie picked up the award for Cinematic And Box Office Achievement and Best Original Song – Motion Picture for Billie Eilish’s What Was I Made For?
Succession was the big winner in the TV categories, taking home the Best Television Series – Drama award. Sarah Snook triumphed as Best Performance By A Female Actor In A Television Series – Drama for her role as Shiv Roy, on-screen brother Kieran Culkin won the award for Best Performance By A Male Actor in the equivalent category for his turn as Roman Roy, and Matthew Macfadyen received the Best Performance By A Male Actor In A Supporting Role On Television gong for his portrayal of the power-hungry Tom Wambsgans.
