Growing up in Beverly Hills, Paris Hilton, whose parents are hotel tycoons Rick and Kathy Hilton, and Nicole Richie, the daughter of musician Lionel Richie and his first wife, Brenda Harvey, were known to be double trouble. "When we were little, our parents always wanted to separate us," Richie told Harper's Bazaar in 2007.

In 2003, the pampered partners in crime parlayed their socialite status into a reality TV gig on The Simple Life. "They wanted my sister and I to go to the middle of nowhere and live on a farm and basically have our phones and money and everything taken away," Hilton, 43, recalled of the show pitch in an interview with British Vogue in October 2023. "My sister Nicky immediately said no. The first person I thought of was Nicole Richie. She's been my best friend since we were 2 years old."
