Two months before Sofía Vergara exchanged vows in 2015 with Magic Mike star Joe Manganiello in front of 350 guests during a lavish $4.5 million wedding at Breakers Palm Beach resort in Florida, her Modern Family co-star Julie Bowen summed up their fiery relationship.

“He’s like a caveman with her,” the actress told Us Weekly. “She’s so strong and so [used to] calling the shots all the time, and then you see them together, and there’s a part of her that kind of melts. It just warms your heart when you see that because it’s not all the time that you can tell that there’s an aspect to this relationship that’s very – how shall we say? – primal.”

After almost eight years of marriage, however, the dynamic stopped working, especially for Vergara. “Sofía was always there to take care of Joe, while his career was never what it was when they met,” a source told Page Six in the wake of news that the couple were calling it quits. “I think he’s been threatened by her success and joie de vivre.”
