THE TEA HORSE ROAD
More than 1,000 years ago, tea farmers in Sichuan, China, began traveling to Tibet. They were trading their tea for Tibetan horses. The route they took was eventually called the Tea Horse Road. It spanned nearly 1,400 miles through dense rainforests and over steep mountain passes. Many travelers carried bricks of tea on their own backs. Others used mules or horses to carry their cargo. The dangerous journey could last months. Travelers dealt with steep cliffs, extreme weather, and armed bandits. Over time, villages grew along the Tea Horse Road. Today, the route has been replaced with highways.
