Sneaky, his brother Snorty, his little sister Clare and their mother Cheeseball, all city rats, had got swept away in the flood that was cleaning the city roads of all debris. The foursome, who had got separated from their mischief, had held onto each other's tails to ensure they stayed together. After being swept away for a few kilometres, Sneaky spotted a cave by the roadside. He put his forelimb out and grabbed a rock jutting out of the cave onto the edge of the road. He slowly pulled himself up and then helped his other family members too. Shivering and hungry, the foursome ran into the cave, the first dry spot they had seen in a long time.
Cheeseball found some dry hay peeping out of large wooden boxes with slats on their sides. She started to pull it out and as she kept pulling, a few fresh apricots tumbled out. She quickly called her little ones; they surely would be hungry. The family feasted on the apricots and then lay the hay out on a rock to take a much-needed nap. Just as Sneaky closed his eyes, he heard movement at the far end of the cave, followed by a hissing sound. Sneaky immediately sat up and scanned the area. "Mama, wake up, I think there's a snake here," Sneaky cried out. But Cheeseball was far too tired to move. "Clare, Snorty, wake up! I think there's a snake here!" Sneaky screamed in worry. But not one of his siblings moved. Sneaky crawled to the edge of the rock and scanned the area under him. A gigantic monitor lizard was making its way from one end of the cave to the other.
