Watching the Christmas special of Call the Midwife is always like unwrapping a longed-for present that has been waiting under the tree. And from these beautiful photos, there looks to be plenty of winter wonders – plus a fair few babies – on the way in this year’s episode, which is set to air on BBC1 over the festive season.

As the residents of Nonnatus House prepare for a very busy end to 1968, the cast of the much-loved period drama offer us a glimpse at some of the highlights to look out for…

A FAMILY CHRISTMAS

Fashionable midwife Trixie (played by Helen George) and new husband Matthew (Olly Rix) are now back from their honeymoon, and the Aylwards will be seen celebrating Christmas with the help of an unexpected guest - Trixie's fun-loving osteopath brother Geoffrey Franklin (Christopher Harper), who is returning to add some extra sparkle to proceedings.
