The word iconic is overused, nowhere more so than in fashion, but when it comes to the Virgule heel, no other word would suffice. The way some designers own certain silhouettes— think Chanel, Dior, Balenciaga—the comma-shaped heel will forever be associated with Roger Vivier. Vivier changed the footwear game when he created the Virgule in 1963. Before that, he was already gaining notice for the shoes he created for Christian Dior. The Virgule established his name as one to watch as he struck out on his own.
